Welcome to TBI Warrior® Foundation! This is our first blog post and the first news we share. Officially, today is our first day.
We are very excited about this milestone. TBI Warrior® Foundation is an organization founded on very basic principles: love, sacrifice, commitment, and selflessness. It first came as a thought to Roxana and I back when I was going through rehabilitation (2009-2012) after I had sustained a moderate Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) while serving my third combat tour while in Iraq. During those days, it became evident that living with the effects of a TBI, both, physical and cognitive, can become a permanent challenge in ones life. I was, and still am, personally blessed with having the support of my wife, friends, and healthcare providers. Now, observing others around me, I noticed that many were not as fortunate as I was. TBI Warrior® Foundation exists because of the gaps and challenges we personally have seen in our community and in our lives.
Brain injuries can occur in many different ways. In the military population, a brain injury could result from an improvised explosive devise (IED) detonation, a gunshot wound, a maneuver accident, among others. In the civilian population, a brain injury can occur from car accidents, sports accidents, falls, birth, etc. It is important to know that no two brain injuries behave the same. Regardless of the mechanism of injury, many will result in lifelong disabilities. At TBI Warrior® Foundation, we recognize that all TBI survivors are people and that each person has dreams, the desires to be independent and succeed in life. We also recognize and understand the impact TBIs have on families and caregivers.
The U.S. Declaration of Independence states “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. It is clear that “all men” means ALL MEN AND WOMEN. Certainly, it does not exclude people with acquired disabilities after a TBI. Living with disabilities may cripple the ability to have the rights mentioned here. People with brain injuries have the right to life, the right to be free by regaining their independence, and they have the right to fulfill their dreams and pursue their happiness.
